Partner in Charge / Design Principal: Robin Lee
The commission was for the delivery of a masterplan for Canal Quarter in the historic Potteries area of Stoke-on-Trent for developer Urban Splash and local regeneration company RENEW.
A pilot project was completed in 2009 for the delivery of a footbridge across the Bridgewater Canal with associated public space as the first phase of the masterplan and a statement of intent on behalf of the development partnership. The bridge was the outcome of a successful stakeholder consultation process that we conducted involving local residents, the local school and businesses. The bridge is conceived as a social space functioning as a place for gathering and pause over the canal, while the structure acts as a generous canopy to the towpath below.
The bespoke top surface is designed using patterns derived from local industrial ceramicist Thomas Minton in the late 19th century thereby establishing strong links with the history of the local community. This first component of the Canal Quarter masterplan was completed within a tight timescale and limited budget.
